Most fantasy worlds either have their own rules or a variation on anothers. Guild wars happens to have its own rules on the elementalist and thats up to the dev team to decide.
The whole point of the dual class system was to allow crossover professions such as E/N to play a dark energy caster type. I'm happy with pretty much all professions the way they are although i can see a few merging in gw2 such as
W/P = general martial weapons master using shouts as buffs etc.
N/Rt = dark type caster using rituals to sumon the undead as spirits as well as zpmbies.
Mo/D = same style for prot/healing with possible new spin on healing to make it more useful. Dervish style enchantments in combat to act as a new take on smiting.
Although i like all professions we have and hold reservations about merging i wouldn't mind too much as a new system is always fun and if i want to play the old system i can always hop on gw1 again.
All i'd like to see is more focus on running a 2nd profession, giving more rewards for doing so than running a mostly single prof which is done currently. Also a m,uch larger variety of armour with less restrictions on keeping to a style template for the class.
